From Suicide to Living, Vidharbha, Maharashtra

Art of Living programmes are making strides in bringing back life to suicide-prone Vidarbha farmers

More than 1700 farmers have committed suicide in past one year.  At a time when all seemed lost for the farmers in the area, 50 yuvacharyas (youth leaders) of The Art of Living have conducted Samagra Arogya Shibirs, five-day camps focusing on trauma relief and alternative farming methods in the suicide prone area of Vidarbha.

The Bangalore-headquartered international NGO’s intervention works at two levels – immediately boosting the morale of the farmers and also equipping them with techniques and skills that help them in the long-term to address their situation.

In a span of 90 days over 1,25,000 people in 21 villages benefited from the programme which prompted the Government of Maharashtra to issue a circular to collectors of the other affected districts – Yavatmal, Akola, Buldana, Washim and Wardha  to take up this project, now called ‘Swavalamban’.

In the initial stage Nav Chetana Shibirs and Y.L.T.P courses are started especially for the farmers.  Regular satsung and continuous moral support of the yuvacharyas helped these farmers to get their confidence back.  A lots of Youth have been trained from rural area of Vidarbha.

Success Story

Also, a modern farm have been set in 5 acres of land at ‘Gondkhari’ under the banner of Y.L.T.P to show the farmers that farming is still a profitable venture when the proper technology is known and implemented.

With combine technology of Bio-Dynamic, Wormy Culture and Agnihotra, tomatoes have been planted and achieved a record production of over 20Tons of high quality tomatoes from 2 acres of land.

Investment for future

Understanding the utility and economy of the tree, Laxmitaru, it has been planted in the Nursery for distribution in various places of Vidarbha.  150 Lamitaru has been planted in Akola district of Vidarbha.

Testimonials

People started smiling after the course, earlier they were very stressed and scared.

--Anna

My life is transformed because of Art of Living. Now I am able to earn more without investing much.  I am feeling confident and can do anything for the society

--Vilas

In a short span, the programme has helped thousands come out of depression. In a letter written to the District collector by Chief Administrator of Vasantrao Naik Ksheti Swavalamban Mission on November 16, the organization has highly recommended The Art of Living Programme for the Vidarbha farmers, “We have observed excellent results in Morshi taluka where The Art of Living has been conducting free camps for the farmers. This has helped in reducing suicides in Morshi. These camps must be implemented in all the five districts – Akola, Yavatmal, Buldana, Wasind and Wardha.”

From areas where one suicide per eight hours was the norm, there is now a sense of optimism. “I am confident that things will get better,” says Anand Rao Sabde from Nimbhi village in Morshi district. Debts and poor yield had caused him to give up on his fields. "The pranayaam and Sudarshan Kriya have made me a stronger and positive. I was so encouraged by the natural farming sessions that I started cultivating my fields once again," he says.

Youth like 22-year-old Pravin Thakre gave up alcohol and gutkha after the training camp.

Thakre, who used to lease his three acres of land to others now says, "The skills I have learnt have given me the confidence to cultivate my own land."

The Art of Living’s approach has been a practical one, focusing on conducting detailed surveys to identify the problems of a village, says Jayant Bhole, who is carrying out the Art of Living Vidarbha Farmers Project in Morshi Taluka. “We have worked in 19 villages and our target is to reach out to 90 villages.”

Ravindra Thackeray, resident deputy collector of Amravati, says, "Such programs are long overdue and we are happy that the Art of Living has taken the initiative."

Over 200 local youth have joined in the organization’s initiatives and have undergone the Youth Leadership Training Program. They propose to continue AOL’s mission of making villages self-reliant.

Integrated Rural Development Project, Nanded, Maharashtra

After 50 years of Independence if we take review of the the rural development programs.  We can conclude that billions of rupees were spent on those programs but they are not fruitful to the expectation, if we analyse the facts the major flaw in this programs  was lack of peoples participation, at planning, implementing and controlling level.  Also the mentality of the rural people is towards Subsidy Raj  Instead of implementing the scheme they want to mystifies the funds as they are not guided for their betterment.

After considering these programs it was decided to implemnet the integrated rural development project with the techniques of Art of Living organization.  Basic thinking behind the scheme is that unless a person is mentally and physically fit, creative work from that person can to be expected.  With this basis, a program was formulated and results are very effective.

The program- Selection of Villages

After discussion with Honorable Minister of State Rural Development Department Shreemati Suryakanta Patil, 20 villages from 4 blocks were finalized.

Meeting of Sarpanch and gramsevak was conducted in the presence of Honorable Minister and the program was explained to them.

In all the villages satsung were conducted and people were appealed to conduct cleanliness campaigns in the villages, on the very next day 200 to 300 people started cleaning of the village, they totally cleaned it.

Conducting YLTP and Part 1

Afterwards all the Gramsevaks & (Chief of villages) were told to send Youths for YLTP and 10 people from each village for the Part 1 course, 105 youths and 125 people attended the course.  The major flaw was recovered and youth were supported by Part 1 course participants.

All the members who attended part 1 and youth collectively started working in the villages and were told to arrange cleanliness camps and Part 1 course.  Hundreds of villagers are now attending the course.  After the course people gave up all their bad habits. In all the villages a massive movement for construction of toilets was launched, in two villages the construction is over.

Formation of Self Help Groups

The youth were guided to form self help groups and open accounts in the banks for key activities.

Water conservation Activity

With the help of Government agencies in 10 villages 500 hectares/ village of land will be undertaken for water conservation and water sheds will be developed with the help of the villagers in next 2 years.

Coloring of the Village

After constructing toilets in the villages and the village is clean the whole village will be colored in pink color including temples which is a good sign of communal harmony.  Two of the villages are painted in pink fully.

Chemical free forming

The youth are guiding the villages about the bad impacts of fertilizers and pesticides and in 2 of the villages, organic manure preparation has started and very soon  it will be spread all over the villages.

Formation of committees

To take further care for the cleanliness of villages the people formed committees, these committees are responsible for the whole village cleanliness.

Panchparameshwar and Chaupal

This concept is introduced in the villages and 2 of the villages have accepted this concept and the working will start very soon.

Government Aid

Government have allocated 3-6 crores for the infrastructure.  Activities like cement, roads and community hall.  Kids garden, library, Gymkhana for the villagers. Recent Government gave approval for 4-5 crores under Human Development Program.  In which 10 of the villages are covered.  The SHG members will be given milch animals

In future, these villages will be the ideal villages and will be milestone towards a powerful nation.

Sri Sri Seva Mandir, Tripura

At present 17 Sri Sri Seva Mandir schools are running successfully in some villages. There are 636 students. The programmes of the Seva Mandir is coordinated by AOL yuvacharyas.

In 2001 they went to the villages, they saw there was no schools. So with the help of the tribal person, they made the people understand the importance of the education and motivated the people to send their children to school.  In spite of the problems the dynamic yuvacharyas went to people again and again motivated them to come for Nav Chetan Shibirs.

After this shibir people find changes in themselves physically and mentally. They sent their children to school. Yuvacharyas started the first generation school. It was a nursery school with 20 children. Even though it was very difficult to enter the village without the help or the company of the tribal person they traveled every day to the village and started teaching the children. It is really appreciating to say that within 1 year the education started improving and now it has come to such an extent that the students of the government school also has joined this school. It is sure that they will built more schools in the tribal areas and make village a model village.

YLTP In North Bengal

YLTP activities include taking of Part – I courses, NCS, YLTP, Prison, SSY, promotion of Ayurveda. They train the farmers for chemical free farming as well as zero budget farming. Last 2 years they are doing this and at present we are having 4 exhibition plots where we are growing crops like various vegetables, mustered, til, paddy, wheat etc. This area is almost covered by tea gardens but due to dull market condition gardens are getting closed and this also has caused a great threat. By proving the micro credit facilities as well as forming self help groups after conducting YLTP, they guided these people to overcome the crisis and even stopped the conversion.

To over come malaria in this region they had already planted more than 75000 Laxmi Taru plants in the rural areas. Around 80,000 Sobhabul plants and 65,000 neem plants are also distributed. A future plan of starting schools in the villages have been planned.
