Madhurya

Tradition. Beauty. Colour. Intricacy. Exclusivity. Pure. Vibrant.

These are the elements that define every piece of master craftsmanship that is Madhurya

Once H. H. Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, Spiritual and Humanitarian Leader, Founder of the Art of Living, enquired a visitor, “So what do you do?” ;  “I am Interior Decorator”,  replied the visitor. “Oh! We are in the same profession!”, exclaimed Gurudev.

In the olden days, they used to have beautiful entrances with pillars, beautifully carved doors and arches with foliage. Nowdays people think, “what is the use of having something fancy?” Having a minimalistic approach towards design and aesthetics has become the norm.

There was intelligence behind decorating the entrances in the olden days; the thought was that one doesn’t know the state of mind of the person coming from outside, the circumstances he has gone through. Whether angry or irritated or tired, when the visitors see something so beautiful, there is an immediate shift in the consciousness. The quality of his/her consciousness is altered and brought to a very pleasant state.

So when you have a very beautiful entrance with an arch of jasmine or other flowers, you add fragrance and beauty.  Naturally, when a person enters the house, you are ensuring that they walk in with pleasant state of mind. That definitely adds to the harmony of the entire household.

Similarly the Tanjore paintings, which are so grand, vibrant and colorful usually shown depicting the divine, are used in the house. The thought behind it is that even when someone comes and sees such a grand piece with the glorious decorum of the divine, there is sense of honor and beauty instead of the feelings of extravagance, jealousy and envy.

The various themes that adorn the furniture are inspired by nature, like flowers and animals.

Each motif has its own significance.

The delicately carved motif of Peacock is a bird with beauty and grace. Also it does not open up its feathers all the time. Only when it rains, do we get a glimpse of the beautiful colours and the graceful fanning of its plumage in totality.. Likewise being in the presence of Natural elements and Divine, we get a glimpse of the One consciousness and the Brahman. Similarly the swan mofits symbolizes Discretion. The lotus motifs signifies the complete blossoming of the individual potential.
