Incense Stick Manufacturing (Aggarbatti)

Post the 2004 tsunami, which had a devastating affect the on villagers in Vadak Poigainallur, Nagapattinam District in Tamil Nadu. Most of the relief that came for the tsunami victims were focused on the men: getting them back onto the sea to earn a living and were donated boats and nets.

There was an urgent need to empower women to be self-sufficient and provide an alternate source of income. In May 2004 Sri Sri Ravishankar Rural Development Project (SSRDP) partnered with the Youth Leaders, teaching the women, Incense Stick Manufacturing.

To date 50 women have been trained and earn a regular income from manufacturing incense sticks. Part of the vocational and empowerment training the women completed the Breath Water Sound Workshop. This workshop allowed then to come to terms with the trauma, increasing self worth. These women are now valuable contributors to their homes and society.

“I had decided to go back to my anti-depressants before this (The Art of Living) course, but now I don’t need them. I will practice these techniques every single day for the rest of my life. I only hope other people are lucky enough to take this course. It has given me more help than I could have ever imagined possible. Thank you.”

"Before this experience, I was sad, depressed and starting to lose hope because of the situation here in Iraq. Now, after only four days, I feel confident in myself – happier, have hopes and dreams again and I feel that life is so beautiful. I have started to love everyone and physically I have much more energy and am able to do more things. I want to thank you very much for helping all of us feel better.”
