Change starts with You - Tapovan Education Foundation

Literacy in India is key for socio-economic progress. India currently has the largest illiterate population of any nation on earth. Despite government programs, the literacy rate has grown at a snail pace.

Reasons for Low Literacy Rate

  • Absence of adequate school infrastructure
  • Improper facilities and inefficient teaching staff
  • Shortage of classrooms
  • No proper sanitation in most schools.
  • No drinking water facility and no toilets
  • Teachers being absent from school
  • multiplying urban slum habitats,
  • Discrimination of lower castes has resulted in high dropout rates and low enrolment rates.
  • The poverty in India has also deterred the pursuit of formal education
  • The large proportion of illiterate females
  • Inequality based on gender differences resulted in female literacy rates being
  • Strong stereotyping of female and male roles, Sons are thought of to be more useful and hence are educated

While the statistics has made illiteracy eradication a 2060 goal there are still some people who have vowed to take the responsibility now.

One of such esteem organization is Art Of Living Foundation and their Education program Tapovan Education Foundation This foundation was established in Dec’03 as a nonprofit, charitable and educational public institution for the advancement of education, training and vocational guidance in various fields. Tapovan Schools are designed to serve the children belonging to weaker economic sections. These schools will facilitate the development and growth of a child’s mental, physical, emotional and spiritual faculties by imparting quality education and to help them realize their talents and potentials so that they lead a happy and meaningful life. Amongst 250+ children at Tapovan are four children Sanjeet (12 yrs), Gaurang Das (13 yrs), Jai Prakash (12 yrs) and Neeraj 13 yrs Seven years ago these four children migrated from Bihar and M.P. to Ghaziabad along with their families and many others families. They started living in unorganized slums near Shipra Sun City, Indirapuram Ghaziabad (U.P.) With no education, hygiene they resorted to illegal activities like – thefts, rag picking, baby sitting, construction labour and maid servants.

Since Tapovan school came in existence

  • They started their education from scratch.
  • They learned about hygiene, nutrition, cleanliness, human values, their social responsibilities and yoga for physical and mental health as part of curriculum.
  • They participated actively in sports and cultural events
  • They covered 4yrs of schooling in just 2 years
  • What are they doing now? Now they are studying in the 4th standard of an English medium public school

Achievements of Tapovan

  • 250+ children are getting education every year for last 8 years
  • 18 of them now passed Class Xth in 8 years
  • 84 of them moved to nearby private & government Schools after Vth.
  • 5 of them moved to DPS Indirapuram – Evening School in Class IVth.
  • 310 Niti Khand-II Indirapuram, Ghaziabad

Join the Education movement

  • Sponsor a child’s education (SAC) : in Tapovan schools for a year by donating Rs 2400.
  • Motivate and inspire at least 5 out of school children/beggars/their parents to join a school
  • Do not employ children below 14 years in your home, shops, and factories
  • Sponsor one Tapovan School for a year by donating Rs. 288,000 or Rs, 24000/month for a year
