P. Gopichand: A Champion’s
Secret

P. Gopichand is undoubtedly a famous figure in the world of sports, having put India on the global map in the field of badminton. Following a knee surgery in 1994, he was unable to walk properly for a year. Two years later, Gopichand continued his journey towards recovery at The Art of Living program. In 2001, he won the prestigious All England Open Badminton Championship, becoming the second Indian to achieve the feat after Prakash Padukone.

He went on to launch the Gopichand Badminton Academy in Hyderabad, India in 2008 and has mentored champions including the 2016 Rio Olympics Silver medalist PV Sindhu and 2012 London Olympics Bronze medalist Saina Nehwal amongst others.

Gopichand on his tryst with the Sudarshan Kriya:

I came into the Art of Living in 1996. Prior to that, as a junior level player, I was seen as a rude boy in the court, often quarreling with umpires, throwing chairs and the racquet due to anger. By the end of my junior career, people started saying: ‘Gopi is a cool and calm guy’. I experienced a significant difference in myself which was also observed by others who know me.

On a personal front, I underwent the basic program (The Art of Living’s Happiness Program), Sudarshan Kriya and bhastrika (pranayama). I had a sinus problem. I faced a lot of weather changes during my travels - playing in different places, sleeping in air-conditioned rooms - which created nasal problems. The Sudarshan Kriya helped me to overcome that. It all started in 1996. Five years later, I won the All-England championship.

Gradually, very significant changes have taken place - whether it is in improved concentration and better health.
