A Walkathon to create awareness and action on the Kumudvathi River Rejuvenation Project

Come June 8th 2013, citizens of Bangalore will participate in a walkathon titled 'Walk for water' to create  awareness on the rejuvenation program taken up by the Art of Living for the river Kumudvathi.

Hosted by the Art of Living under the aegis of its campaign 'Volunteer for a Better India', the initiative will see eminent people like Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, Spiritual Leader, Humanitarian and Founder, Art of Living; Shri Doreswamy, renowned freedom fighter; Shri Yellappa Reddy, Environmentalist and retired IFS Officer along with farmers of Kumudvathi Basin and numerous associated NGOs walk for a cause.

The ‘'Kumudvathi River Rejuvenation' plan is a 3-year program to revive this endangered waterway, that could potentially address 60% of Bangalore's water needs. In the past three months, 78 boulder checks, 5 recharge wells have been constructed and 17 Kalyanis have been cleaned and repaired.

"Volunteers are building 'speed breakers' (boulder checks), recharging wells of 15-20 feet depth, planting native trees, shrubs and grasses, cleaning ancient ‘Kalyanis’ (natural springs in villages), de-silting the region, etc. Through these activities ground water levels can be recharged, and in turn the river can be rejuvenated", explains Dr. Lingaraj, Geologist, who has digitally mapped the Kumudvathi catchment area and drawn up the 3 year action plan.

The walkathon is from Mahatma Gandhi Statue M.G Road via Queens Circle, Cubbon Park, K.R. Circle to Freedom Park, on 8th June, 2013 between 9:00 am - 10:30 am contact 99160 25348 vfkumudvathi@gmail.com
