Launch of 'Know Diabetes No Diabetes'

A Mega National Diabetes Awareness Campaign ‘Know Diabetes No Diabetes’ will be launched jointly by Rotary International and The Art of Living, on Sunday the 18th Nov 2012. This launch of the initiative will include a walkathon and free diabetes screening camps across Bengaluru on Sunday the 18th -Nov-2012. About 5000 people are expected to take part in this screening.

The Walkathon will be launched by Shri. Aravind Limbavali, Hon. Health Minister, Govt. of Karnataka, at 08.00 am from the Karnataka State Lawn Tennis Association Stadium, Cubbon Park Bengaluru. The event will also see participation by Sri.Mukhyamantri Chandru President Kannada Development Authority, Rtn.Sri.Bhadri Prasad, District Governor Rotary District 3190; Sri.Ravindra Prasad, Managing Trustee,The Art of Living, and representatives of Nova Nordisk and Sagar Hospital.

Encapsulating the vision behind this initiative, Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar said, “Modern science and technology have made living more comfortable but, also ushered in a plethora of lifestyle diseases like Diabetes. Unfortunately, apart from being known as the IT capital of the world, India is also known as the Diabetic Capital of the world. The purpose of this joint initiative is to sensitize more than One Million high risk category people to a healthy lifestyle across India.”

Rtn.Sri.J.B.Kamdar, Chairman Know Diabetes – No Diabetes, said “The initiative aims to mobilize thousands of Rotarians and volunteers of the Art of Living organisation across the country to create awareness on diabetes and sensitizing the population on this health threat. The project will focus on educating people on the requirement for healthy lifestyle, sensible exercise, proper medication, breathing practices, yogasanas to prevent and manage diabetes. Hundreds of screening camps are planned to be conducted by the Rotary clubs across the country.”

Free-of-cost screening camps, are being organized by the Rotarians and The Art of Living volunteers, across 100 centres in Bengaluru. Over 1,600-screening camps and diabetes awareness exhibitions across Karnataka will be conducted. This initiative will also be launched in 23 districts of Karnataka by Feb 2013.

Rotarians of Rotary International District 3190 led by Rotary International Director Yashpal Das, Rtn.PRID.Panduranga Setty, District Governor Badriprasad, Rtn.Dr.Asha Katiri and Rtn.Amarnath – Director Community Service are co-ordinating this event with the support of Dr.Vedamurthy Achar and Shri.Prashanth V.Kumar Directors Living Well Program The Art of Living.
