View Assam violence as human tragedy, not political issue: Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

10th of Aug 2012

Spiritual leader and founder of Art of Living Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar has said that violence that affected the lower part of Assam must not be politicised and must be viewed in a more humane light.

The spiritual Guru, who toured the affected areas of Chirang and Kokrajhar districts, said: "I would appeal to all political parties that instead of turning this matter into a political issue, they must view it from a humanitarian point of view."

"I request all political parties to leave their vote bank politics behind and ask them to approach the problem from a humanitarian angle. The violence that affected western Assam is a black spot on the country and we have to assure that such incidents do not take place again," he added.

Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar also visited a relief camp for Bodo victims at Kajalgaon High School in Chirang district. He also visited a Muslim relief camp at Basugaon in Kokrajhar district.

Meanwhile, the situation is improving in the violence marred areas and no untoward incident has been reported from anywhere in the last 72 hours.

Army continues flag marches to keep a watch on miscreants. Curfew has been relaxed in entire Chirang district today for 12 hours.

On Wednesday four bodies were recovered from Kokrajhar, Baksa and Chirang districts taking the toll to 77 in the clashes, which broke out on July 9 between Bodos and migrants. (ANI)
