Project Welcome Home Troops

After War, A Run for Peace

Congressman Ryan supports the peace of mind returning veterans

“This marathon, all 26.2 miles, is a way for me to show these men and women that I stand with them. And I know that Project Welcome Home Troops is there for them too,” said Congressman Tim Ryan before he ran the Cleveland Marathon on May 20, 2012 to raise funds and awareness for Project Welcome Home Troops. This project is a resilience-building and trauma relief workshop for returning veterans, through the International Association for Human Values (IAHV), Art of Living's partner organization.

20% of returning veterans suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder, experiencing emotional numbness, anxiety, insomnia, flashbacks and nightmares that result in difficulty returning to their normal home and work life. Without tools to manage these symptoms, some veterans are left to cope through alcohol and drugs. About 18 veterans commit suicide every day, a rate now higher than that of combat fatalities.

Deeply concerned about the stress and trauma our returning soldiers face as they adjust to civilian life, Congressman Ryan supports Project Welcome Home Troops because he believes will help our soldiers manage the trauma from war and properly reconnect with their families. As one Marine said about the program, "thank you for giving me my life back."

“Running this marathon will give all of us in northeastern Ohio an opportunity to help raise the money necessary to fund Project Welcome Home Troops, and give our Veterans the opportunity to reestablish and reconnect themselves to the lives they had before they left to serve," said Congressman Ryan.

Open to veterans of all ages and from any war, Project Welcome Home Troops uses transformational breathing techniques to reduce anxiety, deal effectively with strong emotions, increase resiliency and energy, and improve overall performance. Researched at the University of Wisconsin, these techniques are taught over a six-day course, and help veterans take back control of their minds and emotions, as they continue the practices on their own.
