Yoga for Beginners

Simple Yoga Asanas benefit greatly

The word ‘Yoga’ usually conjures up images of convoluted postures/ asanas, and usually, for beginners, this might seem quite intimidating. Fret not! Yoga and yoga asanas provide simple and practical solutions to all our daily problems. Yoga doesn’t concern itself only with the postures/ asanas; it goes beyond the physical realm, to the ultimate goal of spiritual fulfillment.

It is best to follow one master rather than getting confused with different schools of Yoga. Therefore, the first step towards learning this beautiful art is to join a master who can impart it to you. Some of the philosophies or techniques taught in Yoga may be new to you. It is a good idea to keep an open mind as it will help you broaden and enhance your Yoga experience. Inform your instructor in advance about your medical conditions so that they can design your yoga asana practice accordingly.

Helpful Yoga Tips for Beginners

Wear loose and comfortable clothing that is appropriate for the temperature in your city

Avoid wearing belts or excessive jewellery

Preferably practice your yoga asanas on an empty/ light stomach

Do not exert when your body; instead practice yoga asanas gently

While beginning your practice of yoga asanas, keep in mind that different people are at different levels of expertise; some might easily perform a yoga asana, while the others might need a little more time and practice. Therefore, do not feel pressurized to over-exert yourself, do as much as you are comfortable doing and stretch a tad bit more (in order to improve your flexibility.)

Ancient texts say, ‘Sthira Sukham Asanam’ which means let the yoga asana be steady and enjoyable! When the yoga asanas are coordinated with the breath, the practice becomes effortless. Moreover, the breath can act as a reference point, when it is light and long, then the muscles begin to relax, but when it is jagged or uneven, it means you’ve over-exerted. Do not be alarmed if you experience some soreness in the muscles during the initial days of your practice, but if there is pain in the muscles, inform your instructor immediately.

Lots of toxins are flushed out of the body as we practice yoga asanas, so make sure that you drink at least three liters of water every day as it aids the cleansing of your body and also improves your complexion and health.

A Yogic life has a lot to offer, make the most of this wondrous journey!
