Art of Living, meditation courses and health camp organized

19th of Mar 2017

Silchar: A six-day long ‘youth happiness programme’ was held in the conference hall of Radhamadhab College here which concluded recently. It was conducted and guided by Sangeeta Nandi Mazumdar, an international teacher of Art of Living, Yoga and Meditation. She also took knowledge sessions to the great enlightenment of the students of Arts and Commerce streams. It was a unique programme being the first of its kind organized by Students’ Health Care Centre of the College. Generally, such Yoga and Art of Living classes are organized and held by private organizations and NGOs.

Sangeeta Nandi Mazumdar while conducting the Art of Living course laid stress on the best way of management of life for an individual in the best interest of himself and the society as a whole. An important part of the lesson is breathing exercises and meditation. Art of Living also covers several social services which include conflict resolution, disaster and trauma relief, poverty alleviation, empowerment of women, education for all, campaign against female foeticide, child labour and environment sustainability. An important component, as she pointed out, of Art of Living is the uplift of human values from the grass-root level.

On meditation, Sangeeta Nandi Mazumdar said it is a sort of relaxation. It is not about concentration, it is actually about de-concentration. It is not about focusing one’s thoughts on one thing, but instead of becoming thoughtless. Meditation leads to calm and composed mind, good concentration, better clarity, improved communication and relaxation and rejuvenation of the mind and body so good for students, she pointed out. Besides, meditation helps in reducing high blood pressure, the levels of blood lactate and reducing anxiety as well as improves the immune system.

In a meditative state, Sangeeta Nandi Mazumdar said, one is in a space of vastness, calmness and joy and this is what one emits into the environment, bringing harmony with the nature. To experience the benefits of meditation, regular practice is necessary. It takes only a few minutes every day. Once imbibed into the daily routine, meditation becomes the best part of one’s day, she stated. For students, meditation is of great help as it builds in them greater confidence, clarity, better health, mental strength and energy as well as greater dynamism.

Apart from that, a daylong free health camp was organized by the Students Health Care Centre of Radhamadhab College on Sunday at the community hall of Punicherra under Bhuvandahar tea estate, 45 km from here. The area is most backward inhabited by the tea garden workers, their families and people mostly engaged as daily wage earners as well as sundry works. Around 500 patients who attended the camp were examined, diagnosed and provided free medicines. In the case of some critical patients and calling for surgery, they were referred to Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH).

For this camp, four doctors from SMCH and two deputed by the Joint Director of Health Services, Cachar, examined the patients. They were assisted by pharmacists and other paramedical staff. All the members of the Students’ Health Care Centre including the chairman and principal of the College, P Deb, as well as Dr. Kankana Nath, convener, were present in the health camp along with the volunteers. The local people were highly appreciative of the initiative taken by the College and wished more such camps in future.
