Pune: Congratulating Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his decision to do away with beacon lights for VIPs, spiritual guru Sri Sri Ravi Shankar on Wednesday appealed to religious leaders to step out of their seats and work with people to reduce distance between them and the masses.

Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and spiritual guru Sri Sri Ravi Shankar at an event at Annabhau Sathe Hall in Bibvewadi where he was awarded a lifetime achievement award

"The PM has done a good work by banning use of red beacons. Now, religious leaders must leave their seats, reach out to people and work with them. It is the need of the hour to increase the self-strength and work for development of people and the nation," he said while addressing a function where he was awarded a lifetime achievement award by the Rajya Marathi Patrakar Sangh.

Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis handed over the award to the spiritual guru.

Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar cited the example of Jalyukta Shivar - a scheme run by the state government to conserve water.

Art of Living is working with the government in the scheme. He said, "We will all work together for water conservation. We are committed to ending suicide by farmers. People participated in Jalyukta Shivar to make it a success."

Commenting on journalism in India, he said, "Putting forward the truth is journalism. But at the same time there should be a ray of hope. Positive news must be part of coverage. People get depressed with negative coverage that dominates the media scenario."

Fadnavis said, "Loan waiver is one of the ways to help farmers. But what happens if the farmers are again burdened with loans after a few years? To avoid this, we need to work on irrigation. Jalyukta Shivar has worked well and the worth of the farmers' produce has gone up by Rs 40,000 crore."
