Stand Up Take Action
event 2009

Art of Living across the world has been working in close cooperation with the United Nations to support the Millennium Development Goals (MDG’s). In September 2000, 189 world leaders adopted the MDG’s as part of the Millennium Declaration, agreed to at the United Nations Millennium Summit. The MDG's set an unprecedented global framework for development that is a crucial step towards ending poverty and inequality by 2015.

In the year 2009, the events were organised under the heading ‘Stand Up Take Action’. In Dartmouth Square in Dublin, there was awareness raising event organised by Peter O’Brian and Emily Peck.

Over 50 people took part in the event which included Yoga sessions and the reading of the Millennium Development Goals. Before the event only one of the attendees knew what the Millennium Development Goals were.

The eight MDG goals include

  • Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
  • Achieve universal primary education
  • Promote gender equality and empower women
  • Reduce child mortality
  • Improve maternal health
  • Combat HIV/AIDs, malaria, and other diseases
  • Ensure environmental sustainability
  • Develop a global partnership for development

In 2008, a record breaking 116 million people stood up and took action to end poverty and help achieve these Goals. The movement broke the Guinness World Record for the largest mobilization around a single cause in recorded history.

However, this is a time of extraordinary challenge. The global financial crisis is having a devastating impact on the world’s poorest and most vulnerable. And the climate crisis threatens to undo the gains that have been made towards achieving the MDG’s.

Together, we can make poverty history. Join millions worldwide to 'STAND UP and TAKE ACTION' today!
