Yoga and Ayurveda for Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)

“Often the causes of gynecological problems are related to stress, tension, or polycystic ovaries,” says Ayurvedic doctor from India, Dr. Sreejith. “These issues are frequently triggered by lifestyle factors and arise when the body is unable to produce insulin. This often leads to an overly prolonged or painful cycle—or lack of one altogether."

Ayurveda offers effective treatment for gynecological problems by encouraging lifestyle changes, mindful eating, and identifying the root cause. Specific yoga asanas are recommended, as well as more physical activity. Herbs are prescribed based on the individual’s condition.

Dr. Sreejith from India

Dr. Sreejith is an Ayurvedic specialist from India with extensive experience in diagnosing health issues using pulse diagnosis. Over the years, he has helped thousands of people overcome conditions like sinusitis, allergies, hay fever, digestive issues, migraines, back pain, and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

With pulse diagnosis, Ayurveda can accurately identify disorders. By placing their fingers on your wrist pulse, an Ayurvedic doctor can detect imbalances in the body and prescribe an effective treatment plan.

Regular pulse assessments, a proper diet, and a healthy lifestyle can transform your health and prevent illness.

Yoga to Support PCOS

Surya Namaskar (Sun Salutation)

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) may sound intimidating, but it's not as dangerous as it seems. PCOS is common among women of reproductive age. At least 5–10% of young women (according to a study by the National Institute of Health) are diagnosed with it. Many of them are beginning to recognize yoga as a safe and supportive form of therapy.

If you’ve been diagnosed with PCOS, keep reading to discover how yoga can help. Even if you haven’t, yoga will benefit you—whether or not you have a health condition.

Interestingly, the root causes of PCOS are still unclear. Many doctors believe it results from the stress of a modern, unhealthy lifestyle.

How to Know If You Have PCOS?

Irregular or absent menstrual cycle

Hair loss and excessive body hair (face, back, stomach, arms, legs)

Severe acne

Mood swings

Weight gain

Infertility

While we may not be able to eliminate stress from our daily lives, we can learn how to manage it. That’s where yoga and meditation come in.

How Yoga Helps with PCOS?

Yoga works on much more subtle and deeper levels than just the physical body. It helps release deep-rooted stress from the system, which can improve PCOS symptoms.

Certain yoga poses (asanas) designed for PCOS help open the pelvic region and promote relaxation. Pranayamas (breathing techniques) calm the mind. A few deep meditation practices help detoxify the body and release mental tension. And finally, there’s the powerful Sudarshan Kriya, a rhythmic breathing technique developed by Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, which helps balance emotions and improve mood.

Recommended Yoga Poses for PCOS

(Shared by Dr. Sejal Shah, Sri Sri Yoga instructor)
Note: All poses should be practiced in a guided Sri Sri Yoga class. Women with PCOS should avoid poses that create too much abdominal pressure. Always relax into each posture.

Butterfly Pose (Baddha Konasana)

Helpful for opening the hips and releasing tension. Avoid flapping the knees too quickly—hold the pose longer instead.

Supta Baddha Konasana (Reclined Butterfly)
This is the lying-down version of the Butterfly Pose. Incredibly calming. Add a cushion under your hips and soft music for an even deeper experience.

Bharadvajasana (Bharadvaja’s Twist)
A seated spinal twist that is helpful for women with PCOS.

Chakki Chalanasana (Churning the Mill)
A simple, effective practice. It massages the liver, kidneys, pancreas, uterus, and reproductive organs.

Shavasana (Corpse Pose)
Deep relaxation is essential for PCOS. This pose offers complete physical release and is ideal to end your yoga session.

Surya Namaskar (Sun Salutations)
A few faster-paced rounds are great for weight loss, but slower rounds are better for relaxation.

Breathing Exercises (Pranayama)
Pranayamas naturally eliminate stress. Dr. Sejal Shah recommends daily practice of Nadi Shodhan (Alternate Nostril Breathing) and Bhramari (Bee Breath) for a few minutes. These practices bring calmness and restore inner balance.

A Few Tips to Connect with Nature

Eat whole, natural foods and avoid processed snacks.

Drink plenty of water.

Exercise regularly—brisk walking is great for maintaining weight.

Spend more time in nature and quiet moments with yourself.

Calm your mind—listen to music or read outside.

Meditate and feel the difference.

Meditation: A Powerful Ally
Stress begins in the mind and gradually impacts the body. That’s why it’s crucial to work at the level of the mind. Meditation is one of the most effective tools for this.

The American Medical Association conducted a study that emphasized the benefits of meditation.

“When we turn inward, healing happens naturally.” – Dr. Sejal Shah

Just a few minutes of sitting still with your eyes closed brings deep peace and helps you gain clarity and strength to overcome any challenge.

Many young women diagnosed with PCOS in adolescence often feel overwhelmed. Practicing yoga and meditation from an early age helps cultivate a disease-free body and a calm mind.

Sudarshan Kriya has helped many women manage PCOS effectively.

Science & Spirituality: Hand in Hand

Modern medicine is beginning to acknowledge the role of yoga and meditation in treating conditions like diabetes and PCOS. Many doctors now recommend yoga and meditation alongside conventional treatments.

Dr. Chhaya Patil, gynecologist at Fortis Hospital, shares:

“Today, we must combine science and spirituality for better outcomes. Both must walk together.”

While the causes of PCOS may still be unclear, the good news is that it can be managed. Choose a simple, mindful lifestyle and a regular yoga practice—and you’ll be amazed by the results.
