“Just one more day—and this time, I truly hope it will be different. No more constant stomach aches, no constipation, no persistent headaches. Could it really be possible? This feeling of being blocked up is getting worse every day. I really wish something could free me from it.”
For some of us, this is an internal dialogue we may repeat nearly every day, as constipation has become a regular problem. Often, we mistake it for a disease, but it is actually a symptom—a sign of digestive issues and abdominal discomfort that, if left untreated, can escalate. One of the main reasons constipation becomes chronic is that we tend to ignore it.
As the saying goes, prevention is better than cure. So, one of the best ways to avoid it is by including yoga in your daily routine. Just a few minutes of yoga each day can help relieve irregular bowel movements, prevent straining and bloating, and keep you feeling calm and content throughout the day.
What causes constipation?
Constipation means different things to different people. For some, it’s infrequent bowel movements; for others, it’s the passage of hard stools. Whatever the case, the most common cause is an unhealthy lifestyle.
Irregular working hours, lack of rest, and excessive consumption of unhealthy food damage the body in ways we often don’t even notice. A diet low in fresh fruits and leafy vegetables—especially low in fiber—also contributes to constipation. Insufficient water intake is another major factor.
Yoga to the rescue
The good news is—there’s no need to panic. Before constipation becomes a serious issue and leads to further complications, you can tackle it effectively with regular yoga practice. Irregular bowel movements can cause bloating and abdominal pressure, and if not addressed early, may lead to more dangerous gastrointestinal conditions. Yoga has helped many people find relief from constipation.
Yoga revitalizes the body, improves blood and oxygen flow to the organs, and since many poses involve pelvic movement, it’s especially effective in alleviating constipation.
Here are some yoga poses you can practice regularly to restore normal digestion and bowel movements:
1. Mayurasana (Peacock Pose)
This pose improves digestion and reduces the side effects of unhealthy food. It increases intra-abdominal pressure, helping prevent enlargement of the spleen and liver. Mayurasana tones the intestines and alleviates constipation-related issues.
2. Ardha Matsyendrasana (Seated Spinal Twist)
This asana stimulates the pancreas, liver, spleen, kidneys, stomach, and colon. It improves intestinal peristalsis and relieves constipation.
3. Halasana (Plow Pose)
This pose benefits the liver and intestines. Inverting the legs increases blood flow to the pelvic region and enhances digestion.
4. Pawanmuktasana (Wind-Relieving Pose)
As the name suggests, this pose releases gas from the body—a common issue for those with chronic constipation. It also helps with digestive disorders like dyspepsia and provides relief from acid reflux caused by poor digestion.
5. Baddha Konasana (Butterfly Pose)
This forward-bending posture improves digestion, eases gas, cramps, and bloating. It also reduces stress, which is essential for a healthy digestive system.
So, stop worrying and start practicing! Just a few minutes a day can lead to a healthier digestive system and a happier you. Don’t forget to also improve your eating habits—opt for a diet rich in fiber, fruits, vegetables, and drink plenty of water. All these steps will help keep constipation at bay.
Yoga practice supports the development of body and mind and brings many health benefits, though it is not a substitute for medicine. It’s essential to learn and practice yoga techniques under the supervision of an experienced Sri Sri Yoga instructor. In the case of any health condition, practice yoga only after consulting a doctor and your Sri Sri Yoga teacher.
