Yogis out on the streets of Berlin
27th Jun 2011
For a cause: yoga. 200 yogis gathered together in Berlin on June 25, 2011 for a few rounds of Surya Namaskar (sun salutation). But not in a park or a hall. They spread their mats right in the heart of the city (at the famous Alexanderplatz), intriguing many passersby.
The sun salutations were guided by the sound of a mighty whistle and everyone was invited to join in and be a part of the celebration.
Q: But what are we celebrating?
A: The coming of The World Culture Festival on July 2 & 3 at Berlin’s Olympiastadion.
It’s going to be a weekend of fun and food, yoga and meditation with 70,000 devotees joining the 30th anniversary of The Art of Living. Various exhibitions will also concentrate on the positive effect of yoga on health and peace in the world. “Inner peace is the basis for a peaceful society,” shares Ruud Lubbers, former Prime Minister of the Netherlands. “Yoga is a powerful way to relaxation and stress resolution, because only those who are at peace with themselves can project this outward to our environment.”
The World Culture Festival will also feature a fascinating yoga performance that will see 1,000 yogis performing the sun salutation during the grand celebration. Here, you may try out the sun salutation, locust or shoulder stand and experience it all at the Yoga Park. Not only that, renowned yoga experts will give courses for children, beginners and advanced yogis. In addition, a Yoga Museum will show the historical development of Indo-philosophical doctrine from antiquity to the 21st century.
Shares Christoph, “It’s like a dream come true project. To have the chance to express my own creativity to shape an event and to connect with people from all over the world. I really feel blessed. And I wish all of us two unforgettable days.”
