"Like a flower bud, human life has the potential to fully blossom. The full blossoming of human potential is yoga."
~ Sri Sri Ravi Shankar
Yoga Is a Science
Yoga is the science that leads us along the path of understanding the human essence, and its goal is to reach the pure consciousness, peace, and bliss within us. Yoga reveals to us the hidden laws that govern the mind and gives us tools to handle emotions such as anger, regret, guilt, envy, and fear.
When these emotions take hold of us, our vital energy is depleted, our body becomes weak, and our mind feels powerless. Through the techniques of yoga—physical and breathing exercises, meditation, and relaxation—and by applying this knowledge in daily life, we recharge our body and mind, gaining valuable time for ourselves, our work, our family, and society. Yoga teaches us how to maintain our balance when we are joyful and happy, and how to pass through stressful situations successfully while staying composed. Or simply put—with yoga we take care of our body and mind by touching our spirit (source), which energizes us and harmonizes our lives, making us happier, calmer, and more successful.
Practicing yoga brings the mind into the present moment, releases stress, balances emotions, and benefits the digestive, excretory, circulatory, nervous, and all other systems of the body.
The Knowledge of Yoga
The knowledge of yoga originates from ancient texts dating back at least 5000 years. The ancient Indian sages, in their quest to understand the essence of life, reached high states of consciousness and uncovered secrets for healthy, happy, and harmonious living.
The sages called this secret and sacred knowledge “yoga” and passed it down from teacher to student, avoiding its popularization. Yoga was once the domain of the Indian gods, much like the sacred nectar “ambrosia” was a privilege only of the gods of Olympus. Modern people owe their understanding of yoga to the ancient Indian sage Patanjali, who lived between the 2nd and 1st century BCE. Patanjali compiled all the oral knowledge and practices of yoga into his famous book, the Yoga Sutras (Knowledge of Yoga).
Today, yoga is accepted as an ancient teaching for achieving complete physical, spiritual, and moral well-being—a way to attain harmony with oneself and with others. Conventional medicine places yoga first in the fight against aging. Yoga is for everyone, regardless of culture, religion, education, nationality, or age. Regular yoga practice and the application of its theoretical knowledge develop the human being’s potential.
