Heal Your Body from Injury Faster with Gentle Yoga for Pain Relief

By Eliza Clara┃Posted: June 05, 2019

You know what they say: once you get the real taste of soothing bliss that ONLY yoga can bring to your life, that mat kind of becomes your BFF. Suddenly, you’re into exotic incense, meditation spaces, candles, and mantras. It all starts slow, with maybe a sun salutation (or five, on enthusiastic days). And before you know it, you simply cannot wait to start your day with a refreshing round of yoga.

If you think you’re ready to take your relationship with yoga to the next level, then you have to take a leap of faith. Practising your favorite yoga postures helps you stay in touch with your inner Zen. Yoga is great for helping you avoid injury in the first place, because it increases your flexibility and loosens up your muscles, but it’s also wonderful for recovering from an injury as well.

These five yoga poses will help you get back on your feet and accelerate your recovery.

5 yoga poses for recovery

Yoga is a beautiful bridge that connects the mind with the body, helping with not only the physical aspect of recovery, but the mental as well. Read on for 5 yoga poses that you can practice during the recuperative phase from injuries (after a consultation with your physician, of course).

1. Sun salutations

An all-around exercise for the body, sun salutations really help your muscles get back into being active again. Start off with a few slow rounds, and try to avoid overexertion, especially when it’s your first time back on the mat. Give your body time to adjust to its recuperative rhythm. As the days go by, add on to your repetitions. Try mixing up the pace as well. Identify your sweet spot, and never go past that when you are healing from an injury.

2. Moon salutations

As the name suggests, moon salutations are a series of yoga postures that complement the sun salutations. For this one, you need to channel your inner female energy, which has a cooling aura. Going by the designs of a mandala, moon salutations are a backward series of poses, much like retracing the steps or postures of sun salutations. They go in a round and fluid motion. Let your body choose its own rhythm during repetitions. Stick to the most comfortable ones in the healing phase.

3. Yoga Nidra (Yoga Sleep)

A deep sleep that relaxes your body and invigorates your mind, Yoga Nidra beats a spa therapy any day. You are sure to enjoy these when healing from an injury. Yoga Nidra postures are the perfect spot for you to bridge your conscious and subconscious. Get in touch with your heart’s truest desires during Yoga Nidra, and discover the path to reflective thinking. Try Yoga Nidra to relax your muscles and go for the ultimate power nap.

4. Meditation

Meditation has always been a big part of yoga. Meditating regularly for at least fifteen minutes won’t cause you any physical stress, but in fact, it will help you heal. Create a comfy meditation space. Invest in a good throw and rug, and glam it up with a few exotic cushions. Arrange for the space to have candles, incense, crystals, or anything else that you like. Meditation can stimulate the mind to a great extent, and a heightened olfactory sensation adds up as a perfect stimulant to the mind. Meditate your pain away.

5. Savasana (The Corpse Pose)

Finally, you must take some time to rest. There is no end to the things you can do with savasana: letting go, surrendering, and relaxing. Start with simply laying flat on your back. Experiment with blankets or rugs, whichever works for you. The ultimate goal is to rest, so prioritize your comfort.

ALWAYS consult your doctor before trying out yoga at home after an injury. Your body needs a certain amount of time to heal before you can perform physical exercise. If you are a newbie to the whole yoga scene, it would be best if you sit the first injury out. In case you are feeling too adventurous, it is advisable that you consult with a yoga teacher in person. Strike the perfect pose with yoga and own the recuperative period like a boss. Good luck!
