Create Your New Meditation Space and Discover Your Piece of Peace

By Pritika Nair

Want to create a beautiful meditation space for yourself? Here are 10 simple steps to create your ideal space.

Meditation is ‘your time’ and you want to make it special. You have been meditating for some time now and you already know that your meditation time is special. It may be one of the very few times during the day when you get to do nothing for a change!

So why not add a dash of excitement to this whole thing? You'd like to create your own private meditation space. It could become a small area in the house where you'd look forward to going every day.

It’s good to note here that having a meditation area is not mandatory to meditate. You can meditate anywhere you feel like. Examples include a garden, at work, a car (if you aren't driving), or even an airport while you wait for your flight. But to create an exclusive meditation space or re-design a room for meditation, here are some tips.

#1 Choose a view of nature.

A meditation room that faces lush green trees, soothing blue water, or a flower garden couldn’t be better. You may already be lucky enough to use this room as a bedroom or for other reasons. Considering that it's set in a beautiful locale, choose a small corner in this room for meditation.

Also, in case you are planning to use another room with a less scenic setting, you can always be creative. Decorate the room to create a nature-like setting for a nice meditation experience. For example, you can put up a scenic poster or a painting on the wall which gives an effect of being close to nature.

#2 Keep the space clean.

It works on a simple logic: if the environment around you is clean, your mind can also relax during meditation. Make sure that your meditation area stays clean and hygienic as far as possible. It has an impact on your meditation experience too.

#3 Invite lots of fresh air inside.

An airy and well-ventilated room is going to make you enjoy your meditation better. You want to experience a cool breeze coming through the windows. It will caress your face as you enjoy relaxing after a long day!

#4 Light shades work better.

Pastel shades give a more soothing feel compared to dark or bright colors. You may choose a room which has either white or light walls that helps you relax. Or, you can also consider a wallpaper of your choice to give you a similar soothing effect. Likewise, the curtains for the windows can be sheer fabric. This choice will help add more light, depth, and space to your room.

#5 Light it up as you like.

Your sheer curtains will ensure that enough sunlight enters the room during the day. But if you also meditate in the evening, you may choose the lighting for the room as you please. A Himalayan salt lamp or a scented candle can help. For some, dim lights work better, while others may like it bright.

#6 Hmm, smells nice!

If you would like your room to smell nice, you may choose from a variety of fragrances that you prefer. Whether they're aromatic incense sticks or essential oils, the choice is yours. You may decide to keep the fragrance on while you meditate if you like it that way. Or you can light it up for some time and put it out before you sit to meditate, in case you feel bothered by smoke from incense or the intensity of the scent.

#7 Less clutter is better.

A wide-open space can help give you a better experience than a cluttered, stuffy room. Mala beads, essential oil diffusers, an altar, a buddha statue, or a singing bowl may be nice. But you can keep it clear, clean, and minimal. There’s no need for lots of items in your sacred space.

If you plan to use your bedroom or another room for meditation, clear your meditation corner. There may be other stuff in the room but you can always try and keep your meditation space neat and empty.

#8 Keep a mat for comfort.

It's better to avoid meditating on a bare floor. You may choose a soft yoga mat or a comfortable low-height mattress. For better comfort, you may also choose a soft cushion for a backrest. In case you find it difficult to sit down on a mat, you may also choose a chair with a proper backrest. Make sure that you're comfortable while meditating.

#9 Keep your phone out of it.

Since meditation time is your time, your phone calls and emails can wait for another time. You are being only with yourself. Make sure you either switch off your mobile phone, keep it in silent mode, or keep it away from you, in another room. The whole idea is to disconnect for this time so that you can connect with the world better when you get back!

#10 Play it soft.

You might want to play some music that evokes peace in the background while you meditate. Choose some soft instrumental music that helps enhance your experience. Otherwise, you can keep it simple and meditate with no music at all! The choice is yours alone.

There you go! Your own little sanctuary, your hideout is ready for you to enjoy. Happy meditating!

Create a meditation space at your workplace!

If you are short on time and find it more comfortable to meditate for a few minutes at work, here’s what you can do:

  1. You can choose a small space right at your work desk to meditate in every day. Keep that corner clean and empty. You may put up a few soothing pictures

  2. You can also keep a soft cloth sheet on your work desk for meditation. Spread the sheet either on the floor or on your chair before you sit to meditate

  3. In case you feel cold while meditating, you may keep something warm by your side

  4. Make sure to turn your phone on silent and shut your laptop while you meditate

What else can I do to create more peace?

A breathing practice that supports your meditation can help you relieve stress even further. The breath can help you control your mind and emotions. Practicing daily in your dedicated space can bring you stability and peace in a very effective manner.
