Story of Patanjali and the Gift of Yoga Knowledge - Part 2

Patanjali Yoga Sutras Knowledge Sheet 2

Continues from the previous week's post: Story of Patanjali and the Gift of Yoga Knowledge - Part 1

Another person became curious. “What is the Master doing behind the curtain? I want to see.” He got so curious that he lifted the curtain to see the Master. Just as he did so, all 999 disciples were burnt to ashes. Now, Patanjali became very sad. There he was ready to impart knowledge to the whole world and all of his disciples were burnt.

At this moment, that one little boy returned. Patanjali asked him where he had gone. The boy explained and asked his forgiveness. Patanjali was compassionate and felt that at least one of his disciples was saved.

So he gave him the rest of the yoga sutras, the rest of the knowledge. But, the student had violated the law and Patanjali was not willing to forget that. He said, “Since you have violated the law, you will become a Brahmarakshasa, a ghost and hang on the tree.” And the only way he could liberate himself from the curse is to teach one student. Saying this, Patanjali disappeared.

Now Brahmarakshasa, hanging on a tree, would ask everyone who passed by a question and when they could not give an answer, he would eat them. He had no choice. For a few thousand years, this was the story. He could not find a single person to whom he could teach the yoga sutras. So, he remained in the tree as a Brahmarakshasa. (The lesson here is that when one who has great knowledge does something wrong, the state of Brahmarakshasa will come. An intelligent person becoming a criminal is more dangerous than an innocent person becoming a criminal. If a person, who knows all knowledge and then turns a criminal, it is much more dangerous). Brahmarakshasa was hanging there and waiting for relief.

Then out of compassion, Patanjali himself becomes a disciple and comes as a student to Brahmarakshasa who told him all the yoga sutras, which Patanjali wrote on palm leaves. The story goes that to redeem one disciple, the Master became the disciple of a disciple.

Patanjali wrote the yoga sutras sitting on the top of the tree as that was where Brahmarakshasa sat. Brahmarakshasa worked only in the night. So, he dictated the sutras at night and Patanjali wrote them on leaves. He plucked all the leaves and made a small scratch, drew blood and wrote. This went on for seven days. At the end of it, Patanjali was tired. He put everything he had written into a piece of cloth, set it down and went to bathe. When he returned, he found that a goat had eaten most of the leaves. Patanjali then took the cloth bag and the rest of the leaves and walked away.

In this story, there is a lot of depth. The puranas do not give an explanation. They just give a story and it is for us to unlock the meaning. So, what do we have to find out?

This is due to high energy which prevailed on the other side of veil that had burnt all the students. Forgiveness exists at the core of us. Goat signifies the maya that distracts and deludes us. This leads us to believe that single focus is the only way out.
What does the Goat Signify ? The goat eating the leaves possibly signifies that knowledge may sometimes get overtaken by ignorance coming out of the dharma of the goat - who just wants to satisfy its physical needs of this material world arising from chaturbingshoti tattwa ( 24 tattwas like lust, greed, moha, maya, all the five sense organs etc.). However the brighter side of the story is knowledge cannot be destroyed and the remnants of the knowledge we still have in Patanjali Yoga Sutra is good enough and adequate for us. Does this make sense ? JGD
indeed the boy violated the rule ,but not publically. with out making any noise he went out.so others did not know that the boy left the room. the boy did not encourage others to commit mistake. so he was given a lesser punishment, instead of getting burnt to ashes he became only brahmarakshase. the man who removed the curtain was doing the mistake infront of others ,he was misleading others also even after getting such a wisdome from the guru. that is why he was burnt to ashes. why the remaining people also got punished ? because they did not prevent the man from violating the words of guru . they silently allow the man to remove the curtain. so they were also participated in the crime even though they were sitting idle.
(1) The Veil represents MAYA. When the Veil is not there then there is no MASTER, no DISCIPLE...no light, no darkness...no Knowledge, no Ignorance...ALL IS ONE. Hence all Disciples burnt down on lifting of the Veil. Knowledge is meaningless in absence of MAYA. Even for furthuring the Knowledge a thin Veil of Maya is essential. Jai Guru Dev!
Goat represents the unconsciousness. Patanjali in order to get the bath i.e. (let's assume we are all attached to body & in order to only clean the body we only pay attention to it & not what is going on at thought level ) went even though he wasn't having the entire knowledge. If we give even a very small opportunity to our unconsciousness to raise it'll take over the knowledge & so the consciousness.
1.When the veil was lifted why did everybody burn down? A:Even a small doubt in mind can burn the universal knowledge. 2.Why was one boy forgiven? A:Obviously, he was not forgiven. Per story he became bramha rakshasa, infact. 3.What is the significance of the goat? A.Goat represents Hunger/Anger . Both may eat the up the viveka(knowledge). 4.What is the significance of this story? A:When master became a disciple of disciple, there is nothing that master and disciple relationship. Both are same. There is nothing(knowledge) that is getting transferred. Both are just instantiating what is already known!!
(1) When the veil was lifted why did everybody burn down? What the matter holds is pure knowledge and if one tried to uncover that knowledge without going through proper steps, the knowledge might lead to adverse effects. The reason for all disciples burning down might be because of this reason: "when gaining knowledge, 1 thought misinterprested and spread by one disciple can cause misunderstanding in the whole batch", similarly, mistake by 1 disciple affected the lot... also, all other disciples were equally responsible for NOT preventing the one disciple from opening the Veil. Hence doer (person who lifted the veil) is one, however responsibility was that of the group.
significance of d story. the path of knowledge is not so simple. Still one should not loose enthusiasm for spreading knowledge.
Goat represents the mundane existence. The goat eating away the scriptures might mean that when the alertness is lost then the the mundane worldly activities eat up the knowledge within us. We become goat like, grazing on our daily activities which is boring but without alertness we become accustomed to it and lead ourselves to self destruction.
well said....really impressive..
That's true fools wouldn't take it. Or goat only knows that leaves are for eating. So she don't have knowledge that leaves can be used to transfer knowldge. So it is one's duty to preserve the knowledge properly.
Why do you say the boy was forgiven? He had to be a demon for a 1000 years - that is a lot to bear.
Wondering on the Goat...does this mean - does not matter how much you try to bestow knowledge, a majority of your effort goes into vain? Somebody has said "Advice is of no need - the wise wouldn't need it and the fools wouldn't take it" :-)
The veil symbolizes the mind that separates the Master and the disciples. When the veil is lifted, there are no 2 - there's only 1 & hence the apparent existence of the duality disappeared. Could we look at it this way? :-)
May be, the doubt that came into the disciple was because lack of complete trust on his master, that he is being taken care of.. Lack of such faith could have destroyed.. :)
please also provide the explanation of the riddles of previous chapter.....
It's your kumati...that means bad intelligence
What is the significance of the story? Have trust in the knowledge obtained from Master Have patience till the complete nowledge is revealed to you. It happens in stages and if you try to jump ahead, it would lead to destruction Its is the responsibility of all disciples gaining knowledge to take care of each other and help and guide each other in the right path (Satsang) If certain Natural disasters push you from gaining the knowledge completely, please have trust in your master, the knowledge would reach you by master's grace. Whe it comes to Knowledge, Disciple learns from Guru and disciples also learns from his disciple
Why was one boy forgiven? While accepting knowledge, there are few instances where one might skip the knowledge becuase of natural cause/ karmic effects. However, the intent of genuienly accepting the knowledge is what the Master would look for. However, not being able to follow the Guru's order being because of his Karma, the Master imparts knowledge to the disciple and also takes measurement to ensure this bad Karma's are taken off the disciple and makes the disciple a Brahmarakshasha not as punishment, but as a path to liberate him from his Karma
