Washington DC: An Architectural
Vastu Perspective

Did you know that Washington, DC is aligned with Vastu principles? Read to be amazed!

Years ago, during his first visit to DC, Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar talked about the stability of The Washington Monument. The monument is considered a Vastu remedy that supports the stability of the United States. To learn more about DC and its connection to the ancient science of Vastu, read on.

Vastu as a Stress Remedy

Vastu Stress Relief

Living in stressful cities can harm our well-being and make it harder to contribute to society. Vastu reduces stress in the physical environment and promotes productivity and a thriving culture. It creates an atmosphere of influence, stability, and respect.

According to the science of Vastu, it is important to align our physical environments and bodies to two primary forces of nature for us to experience success, productivity, and well-being in our lives. There are two types of energy, solar energy that comes from the east, and magnetic energy that comes from the north. These two forces of nature set up an electromagnetic grid system that covers the surface of the earth. This grid is the longitudinal and latitudinal lines.

The Earthly Grid System

Vastu Shastra

The City of Washington DC is built in alignment with the earthly grid system, which gives it the support of nature. Vastu Shastra is the architectural science that originated in India 7,000-10,000 years ago. It is used in planning communities and designing buildings that are aligned to the earthly grid system.

When a building or city is aligned to this earthly grid system, it receives the support of nature.

Designing a structure or city according to nature's forces through Vastu is like swimming with the river's current, not against it.

Many of the world’s most enduring structures and cities were built according to the principle of Vastu, including the Mayan and Egyptian Pyramids, the Greek Parthenon, the Roman Coliseum, and the Taj Mahal. The common thread between them all is their alignment with the earthly grid system.

The Shape of Energy

five elements
Scientific studies have demonstrated that energy moves most harmoniously in a rectangular or square structure where all five elements --earth, water, fire, air, and space-- are in balance. When a building is not rectangular or square, the five elements become unbalanced, and energy gets stuck, such as in missing corners or extensions. It’s just like a bend in a river or stream, that water can stagnate and become polluted.

The White House and the Capitol buildings were built in alignment with the earthly grid system. They are rectangular, following the principles of Vastu. They also have north and east entrances. To reiterate, in Vastu, when you align a building with the earthly grid system, it gains the support of nature. North and east entrances bring prosperity. Their rectangular shapes give balance to the five elements and enhance success and productivity.

DC also has beautiful tree-lined streets, mostly in the north-south/east-west directions, with park-like open spaces. This layout adds positive energy to circulate throughout the greater community.

The White House and Vastu

White House

  • The kitchen in The White House is in the NW, which is associated with the air element. Vastu says the best kitchen placement is in the SE for the fire element. But fire and air are friendly, so NW also works.
  • The President's bedroom is in the Southwest. The SW direction is connected to the earth element. Placing the master bedroom in the SW area of a home provides a deeply restful sleep and is ideal for the head of the household. This is because positive solar and magnetic energy comes in through the NE area of a home and settles in the SW to benefit the good health of those sleeping in this direction.
  • Both The White House and the Capitol Building have open space in the center area per Vastu. This open space supports the balance of the five elements and the positive flow of energy. The White House has the Central Hall, and the Capitol Building has the domed Rotunda.
  • On the north lawn, in front of The White House entrance, there is a fountain. Circulating water in the north, northeast, or east stimulates the energy of abundance. The north direction is associated with the water element, bringing prosperity to the nation.
  • Additionally, the President's desk in the Oval Office faces north. This promotes left-brain analytical thinking and decision-making.
  • From the White House, the land slopes down to the south to the Potomac River. From the Capitol Building, the land slopes down to the west to the Potomac River. According to Vastu, this can cause instability.
  • The Washington Monument was strategically placed to the south of The White House and to the west of the Capitol Building. This placement helps to balance the south and west slopes of the land, as well as to nullify the destabilizing impact of the Potomac River in the southwest. The Washington Monument helps to restore the stability of the nation.
