IANZ celebrates International Yoga Day with community

Indian Association of New Zealand celebrate International Yoga Day at Allan Brewster Leisure Recreation in Papatoetoe 

The Indian Association of New Zealand (IANZ) hosted a community Yoga session at Allen Brewster Recreation Centre in Papatoetoe, Auckland onInternational Yoga Day, Sunday, June 18.

The event organised in five sessions delivered by five different groups commenced at 9 am. The first session was delivered by Nonita Jaura from the Art of Living Foundation. The session started with a warm up and a little aerobic to get the participants to stretch and flex their bodies.

An enthusiastic number of one hundred people from different age groups, professions and walks of life turned up to celebrate the event. This is the third annual Yoga Day celebrations by IANZ in the past three years.

“The aim of this big event is to raise the consciousness of Yoga amongst the community,” Ram Lingam, vice-president of IANZ said.

Art of Living, the globally recognised foundation for peace and Yoga lifted the spirits of the participants by making them laugh, exercise and perform the asanas.

The second session delivered more of an intensive body exercise where the moderator asked the participants to perform different asanas, benefits of which reflect on different parts of the body and the organs. This session of hot yoga was hosted by Ellen Adoko, founder of Achel Bikram Yoga.

Yoga is an exercise of not just the body but also for the mind and the soul. International Yoga Day celebrates the ancient science and encourages individuals throughout the world irrespective of their age, background or ability to restore mind and body to its healthy working.

Swami Atulananda from the Chinmaya Mission hosted the next session of the yoga that concentrated on the spiritual aspects and benefits of Yoga. He commenced his session with the chant ‘Om’ that he calls purifies the mind, the soul and makes a person aware of his existence.
