You are fortunate

Have you ever felt that everything in life is meaningless? Why are we here? Why this universe?

Is the purpose of life just eating, sleeping, and doing your routine?

These questions indicate a very mature intellect. This is the right time to go deeper into knowledge.  Many people don’t feel like this for a very long time. So when you feel it, you should think, “Oh I am so fortunate!” Read spiritual texts like Yoga Vasishta. You will then understand the nature of consciousness; who you are, and what you are.

What pulls you away from your purpose

You were once these beautiful children, happy, joyful, and free, and then you grew up. In due course, from time to time, negative clouds of emotions came over you. You found that something or the other is not good, this or that person is not good, or you are not good. When you feel, “I am not good”, then nothing around you feels good, and you get into a muddle.

When someone is sitting and thinking negative all the time, what happens? A negative cloud is created around him. You have to pierce through that and come up. That in itself is Sadhana. That is what happens in Satsang when you pierce the negative clouds that have come on you.

Come back to the purpose

How the negativity has come is not relevant. It’s like the dust on the carpet. Instead of looking at the dust and clearing it, we are looking to see which window it has come from, and so much that we get caught up with the window.  Often, instead of clearing the negative clouds, we attribute it to some cause and get stuck in the cause. This only allows more negative thoughts to keep coming.  Come back to the purpose, otherwise, you will get caught up in small insignificant things, forgetting the real thing.

So, review, “What is my life all about and why am I here?” This question is like a vehicle that takes you forward. It is something we should ask ourselves many times. It clears the path, the cobwebs in life. Don’t be in a hurry to answer this question. The one who knows the answer would not tell you and someone who tells you the answer doesn’t know. But this spirit of inquiry can help you reach the highest goal in life.

Making life meaningful

We think life is about survival, and making ends meet. Life revolves around health, relationships, and reputation. One becomes so miserable chasing them.

To know your true purpose, find out what you are not here for. You aren’t here to blame, cry, worry, be angry or miserable. The purpose of life is celebration, commitment, wisdom, and service to humanity. It is experiencing infinity within this finite body, and living timelessness within the timespan of life.

You are here to celebrate and make everyone’s life a celebration. In celebration, you feel complete. So many souls are thirsty. Spirituality is the food we have to give them. It is the food for the soul. Feeding them, quenching their thirst, and making them smile is our purpose. Without knowledge and wisdom, celebration has no depth.

When you make seva your life’s purpose

The very thought, “I am here in this world to do seva (service)”, dissolves the “I”, and when the “I” dissolves, worries also dissolve. Seva is not something you do out of convenience, or for pleasure. The ultimate purpose of life is to be of service. When you make service the sole purpose of your life, it eliminates fear, brings focus to your mind, purposefulness to your action, and long-term joy.

If there is fear or confusion in your life, it is because of a lack of commitment. An uncommitted mind is miserable. A committed mind may experience rough weather but will reap the fruits of its toil.

To be of service, the first thing to get rid of is your laziness. When laziness disappears and you hold on to your commitment, then you will see that what you are doing is what you have come here for. If you keep thinking, “What about my comfort and my need”, then your goal is only to fulfill your need. But when you hold on to your commitment, then you will have a sense that what needs to be done is being done, and you are only an instrument for what has to happen.

Life has no real purpose

The whole universe is a play of consciousness. It is an expression of joy. What is the purpose of a soccer game? So many people getting into the stadium, a few of them kicking the ball from this side to that side, and everybody else yelling and shouting and crying. If an alien happens to drop into our world and he finds these people going crazy in a stadium over a ball, he will think they are nuts.

A game is a game. You can’t make sense of a game like that. Even winning is not the purpose of a game. The process itself is enjoyable.

When you honor every moment of your life, you do not need a purpose.

Make the whole life a game. There is no purpose, there is no aim. Just take it lightly and easily.

Play the game of life without worrying! That is celebration!
