What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is a holistic system of healing which promotes a natural way of healthy living. It is a science of life - a way of living in tune with the nature. Ayurveda gives us the knowledge of disease prevention — to eliminate its cause and to maintain health. Ayurveda preserves a healthy pathophysiology.

Along with Ayurveda, Yoga is a source of practical wisdom rooted in Vedic literature. Ayurveda and Yoga are complementary to each other and extensively documented, offering simple methods to balance the mind and body.

Ayurveda's primary focus is on preventing illness by proactively leading a healthy way of life. It seeks to balance and restore health through wholesome food, balanced activity, contented mind and senses and cleansing.

Ayurveda is a holistic system of medicine and healing, in practice in India for over 5,000 years. The knowledge of Ayurveda has descended through a lineage of sages.

Incorporated in the ancient Indian text — the Atharva Veda (the last of the Vedas), Ayurveda focuses on holistic wellness — the balance of the mind, body, and spirit in rhythm and harmony with nature.

Ayurveda or the 'Science of Life' is derived from the Sanskrit term 'Ayuh' meaning life and 'Veda' meaning knowledge.

Ayurveda is based on two fundamental theories:

  1. Pancha Mahabhutta: In Indian scriptures, all matter is thought to be composed of five basic elements which exhibit the properties of earth, water, fire, wind and space.
That which is manifested in the microcosm is in the macrocosm and vice versa. According to Ayurveda, the human body is also composed of derivatives of the five basic elements, in the form of doshas, tissues and waste products. They govern all the physical, physiological and psychological activities. When the Pancha Mahabhuta or five elements (earth, water, fire, wind and space) are balanced, the body is healthy. When the five elements are out of balance, there is a disease.
  2. Tridosha theory: The Pancha Mahabhuta manifest into life forces that make each of us unique, physically and mentally. The elements combine with the three doshas (life forces) — vata, pitta and kapha. The combination of the three doshas influences our mental, emotional and physical tendencies.

The Ayur Jagruti program gives you a complete understanding of the essentials of Ayurveda and its application in daily living.
